چکیده

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigate the effects on nasal heat exchange and humidification two different surgical techniques for reducing inferior turbinate under environmental conditions.MethodsVirtual surgery using reduction performed in eight airway obstruction patients. Bilateral models each patient were compared: 1) Pre-operative 2) Post turbinoplasty 3) total resection (ITR). Two representative healthy included. Three conditions investigated ambient air cold, dry hot, humid air. CFD modelling airflow conditioning steady-state, laminar, inspiratory conditions.FindingsNasal is significantly altered following surgery, particularly with ITR inspired (CDA). The degree impairment minor simulated range (temperature = 12–40 °C; relative humidity 13–80%). Streams colder are found nasopharynx more prevalent CDA ITR. These related high velocity flow streams, which remain cool their centre throughout widened cavity.InterpretationReduced air-mucosal moisture carrying capacity occurs cooler temperatures patients surgery. clinical impact extremely cold groups poor baseline respiratory function, illness, or endurance athletes special interest.

Ball valve nasal obstruction following incomplete inferior turbinectomy.

An interesting case is presented of a 53-year-old male who was seen with a 10-year history of intermittent, unilateral nasal obstruction following a bilateral total inferior turbinectomy. A pedunculated mass was seen in the right posterior nasal space acting as a ball valve. This was removed and found to be residual turbinate tissue.

Impact of Middle versus Inferior Total Turbinectomy on Nasal Aerodynamics.

OBJECTIVES This computational study aims to (1) use virtual surgery to theoretically investigate the maximum possible change in nasal aerodynamics after turbinate surgery, (2) quantify the relative contributions of the middle and inferior turbinates to nasal resistance and air conditioning, and (3) quantify to what extent total turbinectomy impairs the nasal air-conditioning capacity. STUDY D...

Aerodynamic effects of inferior turbinate reduction: computational fluid dynamics simulation.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the aerodynamic consequences of conservative unilateral inferior turbinate reduction using computational fluid dynamics methods to accomplish detailed nasal airflow simulations. DESIGN A high-resolution, finite-element mesh of the nasal airway was constructed from magnetic resonance imaging data of a healthy man. Steady-state, inspiratory airflow simulations were cond...

Clinical and ultrastructural study after partial inferior turbinectomy.

UNLABELLED We report clinical and histological results obtained after partial inferior turbinectomy (PIT), surgery indicated for the treatment of chronic nasal obstruction. METHODS Twenty patients were divided into two groups submitted to PIT plus septoplasty and PIT alone. The patients were reassessed clinically and histologically by means of a biopsy of the regenerated areas in the inferior...
